Scotch Gambit | Chessreps Opening Trainer
Hi! Welcome to my course on the Scotch Gambit. My name is Laura Smith and I am a National Master with experience teaching chess to both kids and adults. I have enjoyed playing the Scotch Gambit for about a decade to date. As a young competitor I learned the King's Gambit which also is dynamic and fascinating, however, now I defer to the Scotch Gambit. It is fun without being overly risky. I have tried to explain moves using the framework of forcing moves; looking for checks, captures, and threats each move, as well as always going back to the grounding principle of gambits: We give up something (a pawn or two pawns) to get a few key things. One of those being active pieces. Another aspect being a strong center. Lastly, we get a quick attack. It is important to remember to always look at your opponent's forcing moves with as much attention as you give to your own plans. Easier said than done! If you only look at your ideas, you will lose sight of your opponent's ideas. Keep in mind, it is not only about winning pieces but also not losing pieces. If you do not consider what your opponent's last move did, all the opening prep in the world will not matter. Real talk! I hope you enjoy my course and the more you study the more progress you will see. Study the course, and then try out the Scotch Gambit whenever you face 1.e4 e5. Happy studying!
Play pawn to e4.
