The Schlechter Variation arises in the French Defense by playing 3.Bd3 following the normal French setup. This variation plays into the contrast between White's active light square bishop (LSB) and Black's "French Bishop." In some lines, White enjoys an advancement in development as Black tries to remove White's LSB. In other lines, the game follows a typical advanced French line but with White having a strong LSB causing headaches for Black. In the most straightforward line, the game reaches an early endgame where the differences in light square bishops is fully realized.
This course is based off the lessons of GM Avetik Grigoryan, who is a big proponent of this line as a tricky yet effective response to the Surrender Defense.
