Pirc Defense

Pirc Defense

Pirc defense is a response to e4 that's similar in spirit to the King's Indian defense, but has it's own quirks.

Jobava London Kings Indian Defense and Grunfeld Responses

Jobava London Kings Indian Defense and Grunfeld Responses

Jobava London players inevitably run into Kings Indian Defense and Grunfeld lines. This course provides a trappy lines one can play in response. I’ve also added a few basic Dutch defense lines so these show up when playing arena.

Pirc defense simplified

Pirc defense simplified

Simplified Pirc course with a functional arena feature. (For unknown reasons, arena isn’t functional in my other Pirc course.) the lines in this course are simpler than the other one, but the lines do still cover most of the main ideas of the opening.

Pirc defense study of 150 attack

Pirc defense study of 150 attack

Study of a Pirc defense response to the 150 attack. The goal of the early queen move to the h file is to apply enough pressure to the queenside to prevent queen side castling by white. Once that’s achieved, play chess!

Basic Catalan and sidelines v2

Basic Catalan and sidelines v2

One of the big down sides of the Catalan is, no matter what move order you choose, you spend a lot of time with black taking you into other openings: KID, Dutch, modern, Slav, QGA, Englund gambit, Albin counter gambit, etc. This course gives some basic lines for Catalan and most of that other stuff.

Barcza system

Barcza system

Barcza system transposes between the Kings Indian Attack, Reti and Catalon lines depending on how black plays. The idea behind it is to try to transpose into the line that provides the greatest practical and theoretical advantage.

PIrc defense 150 attack option 2

PIrc defense 150 attack option 2

Lately when playing the Pirc defense against the 150 attack, I actually find myself enjoying castling into the attack and then defending wiht a number of counterintuitive moves my opponent doesn't expect me to find. Once white becomes so over extended, the rest of the gaem is usually pretty easy.

Recently I’ve started to play the exchange Slav as white when black meets d4 c4 with d5 c6. This study explores the most aggressive options for white.

Slav knight pin study

Slav knight pin study

I’ve had some trouble with a line in the Slav where the f3 knight can become pinned. I created this study to enable targeted arena sparring to address the weakness.
